We started shooting a series of short films to feed the site of a project that we proceed with a group of friends, and I was gathering information about some boxes that allow you to "soften" the lights of the set. After seeing the prices and other details see, I lean toward what I like: building my own tools. With this idea we will not have to walk or borrowing of trouble trying to get a lens to make a measurement, simply grab the glasses of the first sucker that is close, we open the frame, pull the lens ... and go. Some (few) meters of blue or green (I prefer the green lately for reasons I'll explain below.) With regard to the type of fabric using fabric suggest a bright color and smooth texture that is dull and, if possible, somewhat elastic. The latter is to "stretch" and remove wrinkles. The last I bought was a cloth type "dry fit" (as that of the rowers of NIKE) has been successful. Some beams of zinc (those used for mounting plaster walls, with plates of that material) or some long wooden bar (serving those brooms!). The first thing to do is mount one end of the fabric in the bars that we (zinc, wood, steel, etc. Please note that should be of a material that does not bend easily). Once done we can proceed to "hang" either on a wall, or mounted on the wire, ie, end-to-end assembly or where we have to use the chroma screen. In this case we had a wall (covered with wooden plates) which allowed us to use tape to stretch the fabric from the side edges. Finally we drop the fabric evenly so that there are no ruffles on it. This point is very important and decisive for a good chroma without headaches when we process the material. For that we can use masking tape (as in photography, which is used to "stretch" the edges of the fabric). At this point we must use one of the bars (zinc, wood, etc) placed in the bottom of the fabric to "pull" down and thereby avoid wrinkling the fabric may still have. "Sometimes we had no way to stretch the sides as we had to mount the fabric on a wire (yes, like we were hanging the clothes) and stretch as much as possible from below and fix it with some beams and bricks on it.." This is all about the construction of the chroma screen. Then finally comes the lighting and filters and software used for post production of film material. In this respect the choice of fabric color, I realized that the light delivered is something blue fluorescent tubes and this can produce (to have a set as "home") that the edges of images taken from the web Blue can not be well trimmed. This means that they are "contaminated" by some of the blue light, which causes the filters to balance is so finely that one has to choose between better image quality or higher chroma removal. For this reason I decided to start working with a green cloth.
