Kids Ankle Weights

Children who at birth weighed less than 1,000 grams are more likely to develop chronic physical and mental problems than those born with normal weight, according to a study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Maureen Hack, of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland (Ohio) and colleagues conducted a detailed review of health at 8 years old, a group of children born with extremely low weights between 1993 and 1995. The researchers determined that, after statistical adjustments for sex and socio-demographic status, children born less than a kilo of weight suffered significantly more chronic diseases than those born with normal weight. We found functional limitations (64 percent for children born with low birth weight compared with 20 percent in children of normal birth weight), and compensatory dependency needs (48 percent vs. 23 percent). Among the specific diagnoses found in children born with low weight and compared with normal birth weight, include: cerebral palsy (14 percent to 0 percent), asthma (21 vs. 9 percent), vision deficiencies (10 vs. 3 percent), and IQ below 85 (38 to 14 percent). "In the U.S., in 2002 there were 22 845 births of creatures, weighing 500-999 grams and approximately 70 percent of them survived," the authors of the article. "Our findings show the extraordinary cost of care will be needed to care for and meet the medical requirements, education and others in this large proportion of children born with low birth weight and chronic diseases," they added.
